Nach William: Prinz Harry spricht Ex-Rugbyspieler Gareth Thomas Mut zu

Der ehemalige Rugbyspieler Gareth Thomas hat sich am Wochenende auf Twitter offen zu seiner HIV-Erkrankung geäussert. Sowohl Prinz William als auch Prinz Harry sichern dem Waliser ihre Unterstützung zu.

Der ehemalige walisische Rugbyspieler Gareth Thomas (45) hat in einem Video auf Twitter bekanntgegeben, dass er seit Jahren HIV-positiv ist.

Von seinen offenen Worten zeigte sich nicht nur die Sportwelt beeindruckt, sondern auch zwei Mitglieder der britischen Königsfamilie. Auf ein Statement von Prinz William (37) folgte auch ein unterstützender Post von Prinz Harry (35).

„Gareth, du bist eine absolute Legende“, wird Prinz Harry in dem Post auf dem offiziellen Instagram-Account „sussexroyal“ zitiert. Indem er seine Geschichte mit der Welt teile, würde er Leben retten und gegen das HIV-Stigma kämpfen. „Du zeigst, dass man mit der Diagnose weiter stark und unverwüstlich leben kann.“ Prinz Harry betonte auch, dass es entsetzlich sei, dass sich Thomas dazu gezwungen fühlte, seine Geschichte zu erzählen, bevor es andere tun. „Du solltest über die Bedingungen entscheiden dürfen. Ich und Millionen von Menschen stehen hinter dir.“

Prinz William, bekennender Rugby-Fan und Schirmherr der Welsh Rugby Union, hatte sich zuvor auf dem Instagram-Kanal des Kensington Palastes zu Thomas‘ Schicksal geäussert. „Mutig wie immer. Auf und abseits des Platzes eine Legende. Du hast unsere Unterstützung.“

Gareth Thomas, der 2011 seine Sportler-Karriere beendete, hatte in seinem Clip erklärt: „Ich möchte mein Geheimnis mit euch teilen. Warum? Weil es meine Aufgabe ist, es euch zu sagen. Nicht die der bösartigen Menschen, die mein Leben zur Hölle machen, die damit drohen, es euch zu sagen, bevor ich es tue. Und weil ich an euch glaube und euch vertraue.“ Mit dem Video wolle er aufklären und gegen Vorurteile kämpfen.

Thomas ist der erste britische Sportler, der seine HIV-Erkrankung öffentlich macht. 2009 hatte er sich, zu der Zeit noch aktiver Rugbyspieler, als homosexuell geoutet. Seit 2016 ist er mit seinem Mann Stephen verheiratet. Dieser sei nicht mit dem HI-Virus infiziert, erklärte Thomas in einem Interview mit dem „Sunday Mirror“. Der Zeitung erzählte er auch, dass er mittlerweile durch Medikamente und Unterstützung seines Umfeldes gut mit der Erkrankung zurechtkomme. Am Wochenende absolvierte er sogar einen Ironman in seiner Heimat Wales.
